Here’s why we’ve opened a co-working space (and what you can do there)

Working from home can be challenging. It’s lonely on a computer by yourself. No one to talk to, to share ideas with or ask for feedback. It’s also fraught with opportunities for distraction (cleaning is work, right?).

And yet the options are pretty slim. Do a quick search for co-working spaces in Sydney, and you’ll find that most of them are membership based. Head to a café and you run the risk of no wi-fi, no power points, or a surly barista glaring at you after half an hour with the same coffee.

So we’ve got a lack of space to work (for free) and a charity that’s all about making space for people to be creative. It’s a no brainer, really! That’s part of why we’ve decided to transform our café into a co-working space during the day.

BYO coffee or lunch and take advantage of our free wi-fi, plenty of desk space and comfy couches. We’ve got creative people from all disciplines ducking in and out, so there’s no shortage of inspiration or advice. From 4pm Wednesday – Saturday we also operate as a bar (serving beer, wine, coffee & steamed dumplings), so we’ve got your after-work tipple covered too.

While you’re welcome any time, there’s also a whole host of free creative events designed to help you meet new people, become a part of the community, and learn new skills. Here are just a few:

Itty Bitty Knitty Committee

The IBKC meets every Tuesday from 6-8pm, and is run by our purl-master intern, Jackie. Whether you’ve never even seen a knitting needle, or you’re already onto your fortieth jumper, Jackie caters to all skill levels. Plus, mention you’re a part of the committee and you get a discount on yarn and needles at our friendly neighbourhood knit shop. Read more

Doodle Club

Doodle Club is all about getting out of your bedroom, meeting new people, and maybe sketching something while you’re at it. It’s super casual, and a good deal of non-doodling activity goes on at Doodle Club. Work on your first person RPG, get tips on your Tinder profile, or draw some actual doodles. We don’t mind. Wednesdays, 5-7pm. Read more

Write Here

Write Here meet on the first Saturday of every month. Think of it as your monthly opportunity to Get Some Writing Done. Grab a takeaway coffee and tap away for the whole two hours, or share your writing woes with fellow literary minded folk. thewritersbloc.net

Hack Sounds

Hack is more for the music lovers and the tech-curious, offering everything from hands on jam sessions to interactive tech demonstrations from some of Australia’s top music hardware companies. It’s designed to be accessible, so whether you have no music experience or you’re a professional looking to expand your skill set, Hack Sounds will have some useful experiences for all. hacksounds.com

Finally, of course, you can almost always check out a free exhibition in our gallery. There’s a new one every two weeks, so a new opportunity to check out some contemporary work from artists local and interstate. Check out our website to find out what’s on before you visit.

The Social Space is open as a co-working space from 11am, Tuesday-Sunday. It opens as a bar (serving beer, wine, coffee & dumplings) from 4pm, Wednesday-Saturday. Closed on Mondays.

Our co-working space is free, but chuck a donation in our box and we’ll be extra grateful. We’re a registered charity, and it’s the little things like that that keep us going! //
